...I’ll take the high road and name the best motor for the motoring enthusiast. For stated reasons this motor must be reliable, clean, torquey, take absolutely no risks and be fuel efficient.

The perfect motor for the Jalop is the...

Toyota 1NZ-FXE of the 2nd generation Prius.

This is the future of driving pleasure comrades. We won’t need to bother with things like regular maintenance or a great story of being McGuyver coming home from the parts store. No, we jalops crave safety. We don’t want to explore limits, that could get you dirty, just a nice reliable way to get us from point A to point B. Did you know that with the electric motor you can leave your local farmers market in near silence. I’d be giddy with excitement but my doctor said I need to take it easy until I can refill my zestril.

I’m not even sure if this motor has a redline but that’s fine since you should always follow the speed limit and never drive recklessly anyhow. I couldn’t fathom how anyone could require more than what this little guy can do! If anything it’s a bit too much, I once chirped the tires when I mistook the gas for the br- I mean the carpet trapped the accelerator. That was a scary trip to the chiropractor.

Anyways I love hearing debates, so leave some suggestions in the comments for other GREAT motors. Unlike those awful rotaries which require mechanical knowledge, guzzle gas, pollute far too much and just are WAY too risky for dedicated Jalops and Opponauts as ourselves.

Also rotaries make a funny noise, and real car people should hate them.

Toyota’s got some fantastic engines, from the 1UZ-FE to the 2JZ-GTE. Then you got Honda with their fuel-efficient J-series and the stratospheric F20C. Nissan has the legendary VQ V6 as well as variants of the RB found in the earlier GT-R’s. BUT, lest we forget the LS series!

Wait, you’re being sarcastic?

Doing research I found that some people modify their rotaries so they go BRAP BRAP BRAP.

It’s like those people think they know better than car engineers. It’s all very silly to modify cars anyways. These big companies spend billions of dollars building these and people think they can make them better. It’s daft.

I believe that we all should take public transit. Or maybe revert back to using animals as primary transportation. Like horses. Or dragons.

Ew. Did you know the F20 can rev over 9,000rpm? I don't even know how they were legally sold in the United States.

I would have said Honda D16Z6, based on your criteria.

In case you couldn’t tell, I’m not a fan of rotary engines.

Those tires don't look very efficient. But I'll allow it as long as it doesn't go too fast.

Like any good debate, both sides are usually idiots and the correct answer is in the middle ground.

For rotaries, it’s all about context.

Rotary engined cars are terrible long term driving propositions. Own an RX-8 for an extended period of time, and you will hate it, by a measure equal to or greater than the amount that it seems to hate you.

Rotary engined cars are great short term driving propositions. Drive an RX-8 in proper working order in the proper environment (alone on a twisty back road with no traffic / racetrack, or otherwise someplace you can rev the bloody hell out of it), and it is a wonderful experience.

The ideal rotary is one that eats hydrogen fuel and gives me energy in the form of electrons.

Basically as a hydrogen-powered electric generator. That’s most likely what Mazda is working on, sans hydrogen.

Who? I simply believe that this is the best course of action to save our planet.

Since Longbow was nominating the Prius V4 as the savior of all, I decided to take it a step further.

This is my favorite hybrid. It comes with a supercharger so it can charge its batteries twice as fast and it automatically replenishes the atmosphere with chunks of natural rubber when you stomp on the accelerator.
